Error 17, Roomba® j Series and Combo 10 Max

Roomba® says “Error seventeen (17). Please open the iRobot App for help.”
Error seventeen (17) means Roomba cannot complete and has cancelled its cleaning job.

Your robot's headlight on the front-facing camera is designed to help your robot avoid obstacles and dock, but the headlight does not produce enough light for the robot to navigate correctly in the dark. Ensure the house has adequate light (daylight or dim lighting should be sufficient) for Roomba to navigate correctly. Extremely dark rooms could obscure the iAdapt® localization camera and cause problems with navigation and coverage. 

Possible Causes and Resolutions:

  • Ensure there were no changes to the environment during the cleaning cycle (e.g., closed door, moved furniture)
  • The space to be cleaned is too large to be completed in a single mission
  • The carpet to be cleaned is too thick (e.g., shag carpet)
  • It is possible for Roomba to drive over transitions, such as doorway thresholds, that it cannot drive over again when trying to leave the area. Ensure the house has adequate light (daylight or dim lighting should be sufficient) for Roomba to navigate. Extremely dark rooms can obscure the iAdapt® localization camera and cause problems with navigation and coverage.
  • Excessive clutter can contribute to this error. Clear any cluttered areas.
  • There is an issue with the robot (e.g., a loose Front Caster Wheel) which requires maintenance
  • Ensure the camera is clear of any dust or debris. Wipe the clear window using a microfiber or soft cotton cloth that has been lightly dampened with water or a screen cleaning solution.
  • There may be debris on the iAdapt® Floor Tracking Sensor. Turn the Roomba over and use a clean, dry microfiber or soft cotton cloth to wipe any debris that has accumulated in the round iAdapt® Floor Tracking Sensor opening on the right side of the bottom surface. Do not spray cleaning solution directly into the sensor opening.


If all troubleshooting measures are performed and the message persists, try moving your Home/Clean Base to a different location and start Roomba from the Home/Clean Base. Other types of environmental interference may also prevent Roomba from navigating as expected.
