Where to Place the Dock

Article Details

Positioning guideline:

Please place the dock in an open, flat, and uncluttered area, flush against the wall, away from the stairs, and in a room with good Wi-Fi coverage.

Your dock may look different depending on the model you have, but all the same measurements still apply.
Click the drop-down (➧) menu to display the type of your dock:
Roomba® 100/1000 Series Standard Charge Dock

Roomba® 200/2000 Series Standard Charge Dock

Note: Roomba 205. When placing the robot onto the dock manually, be sure to leave a small gap (1cm to a 1/2 inch) in between the dock and bumper. If you push the robot too far into the dock, it will no longer from a proper connection with the charging contacts. Click here for a photo example.

We recommend you leave the following distances around the dock:

  • At least >1.5 ft (0.5 m>) on each side of the dock.
  • At least >4 ft (1.2 m>) in front of the dock with no furniture such as tables or chairs within this area.
  • At least >4 ft (1.2 m>) between the dock and any stairs.
  • At least >8 ft (2.4 m>) from Virtual Wall® barriers. And make sure the Virtual Wall is facing away from the Base.
  • At least 3 ft (1 m) away from any additional dock.
  • For any auto evac dock, no object is within 1 ft (0.3 m) on the top of the canister to allow the canister to open and evacuation bag replacement.
  • We recommend a little more space around the Roomba® 105 and 205 standard docks. See the images above.

At the end of a cleaning cycle or when the battery is running low, your robot will return to its dock to charge. Always keep the dock plugged in to ensure your robot gets charged while on the base. When you plug the dock into a power source, its power indicator will light up for a few seconds to indicate it is powered on, then the dock light will go off while the robot continues to charge. This occurs with robots and docks equipped with an energy-conserving feature.

Note: for the Roomba essentials models, there is no light on the dock.

If your robot returns to the base and is unable to dock, it will try again until it docks successfully. When your robot makes a connection and docks successfully, the power light will stop blinking and turn solid briefly.

Consistent Wi-Fi coverage will allow your robot to receive information via the iRobot® HOME App, and it will ensure that your robot can find its home when returning to the dock. If your mobile device has Wi-Fi coverage in that location, your robot should have enough signal strength.

Keeping the dock on a level surface and flat against a wall will help your robot clean more efficiently. Putting the dock at an angle will cause your robot to clean diagonally in motion with the wall.

Moving the dock to another floor is not recommended, because the robot uses the dock as a point of reference when beginning a mission. If you plan to clean multiple separate spaces often, you can purchase a second dock from iRobot Store - Parts and Accessories or from an authorized retailer.

If your dock is plugged in, but there are no lights and the robot won’t charge, please visit this article for help. “Why does my Roomba® or Braava® not turn on or charge properly?”
